Playing as the Assassin: Charging the Knife Bar
As the assassin, hold the Spacebar to charge up your knife bar displayed at the top of the screen. If you charge it all the way up without the king turning around to spot you, the stab lands successfully! You steal the king's crown and robes to become the new ruler.
If you see the king start to turn around, release the Spacebar immediately to lower your weapon and act innocent. If you get caught red-handed, guards will drag you away to the dungeon, restarting the cycle with a new assassin.
Playing as the King: Defending Your Crown
Once you wear the crown, the timer bar slowly ticks down as your king ages - growing gray hair and a long beard. If the timer runs out completely, the king dies of old age and your reign ends.
While ruling, various characters will creep up behind you to end your life. Press the Spacebar to glance back. Catching an assassin mid-strike thwarts their plot, but turning around too often ages you faster!
Who Shows Up Behind the King? (Secret Endings)
Depending on who approaches you while on the throne, different events and secret alternate endings will trigger:
- Blond Man with Mace: Takes your crown, restarting the game loop.
- Jester with Polearm: Throws the crown into a restroom, unlocking the comedic "Whyyyyy?" ending.
- Blue-Suited Butler: Offers a green potion (Poison) that kills you instantly.
- Yellow-Suited Butler: Offers a red potion (Immortality). Reaching the door afterward earns the Eternity medal cutscene.
- Heart-Shirt Person: Hugs you instead of attacking, leading to marriage and a happy family ending.
- Updated Version Additions: Includes the Ghost of the former king (looking at him ages you faster), a bearded knight, peasants, and a fanfare band.
